Motivation

Kenya’s high unemployment rate and unemployable graduates have been attributed to the lack of practical-oriented training offered by institutions of higher learning in Kenya. The commission of higher education in Kenya (CUE) and the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) agree to this fact and that there is a great extend a disconnect between university training and industry needs which need to be addressed.

It is worthy to note that, one of the key avenues to this is the lessons learned from the German’s Model of Universities of Applied Sciences. The exposure of UAS will benefit Mount Kenya University in making practical recommendations to the university in reviewing its programme and aligning them with industry needs as this is lacking. There is also need for consulting with the firms/industry  and government so as t have a collaborative approach in programme development and implementation for the programmes offered by the Mount Kenya University with a view of sharing the same concept with other institutions who were not selected to visit UAS in Bavaria region, Germany.

Relevant Insights

  1. Collaboration between industry and institutions of higher learning
  2. Problem-based approach in training and research among students and faculty
  3. Innovative and tailor-made programmes that meet industry needs
  4. Minimal duplication of programmes/ highly specialized units

Three intentions to be applied at Mount Kenya University

  1. Review existing programmes with faculty staff and industry players so as to meet local economic needs.
  2. Consult/visit/Invite industry players and discuss issues of curriculum content, and collaboration strategies for a pilot programme revision for ODeL platform mode of study.
  3. Involvement of industry partners in teaching, seminars, and as guest speakers
