Approaches in the Implementation of the Model of UAS – Germany at Kenyatta University

  • Conducted awareness of model of university of applied sciences to university faculty staff at School Board meeting
  • The DVC Research Innovation and Outreach established a data base of potential industry collaborators to be invited for sanitization workshop
  • Each School/ Department have established a committee or liaison person to coordinate with industry. Formal appointment have been made to the individuals
  • Started the process of restructuring of the student internship process for students to identify problems in industry and use them as part of their final year academic work. Push to have  this embedded during  periodic curriculum review
  • Sensitization on this through students briefing meeting on attachment and using the Engineering Students Association to have a more practical  relevant and industry driven project

Challenges in Implementation

  • Curriculum review done after program has gone a full cycle and has to be approved by Senate and Commission of University Education (CUE)
  • Weak academia-Industry Linkages
  • Very few Professors have industrial experience and those with industrial experience don’t have the minimum requirement to teach in the university
  • Industry could not be prepared to have students extend the attachment period
  • Inadequate Teaching Staff and large workload for regular staff
  • Financial challenges
  • Formulation and enforcement policies on University- Industry linkages/cooperation for strong networks
  • Staff exchanges
  • Review on curriculum development processes
  • Fundraising through proposal writing
