Technical University of Kenya (TUK)

Description

A Brief About The Technical University of Kenya

As envisaged in the laws governing higher education and in line with Vision 2030, the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) was established as the premier Technical University in the country in 2013.  In line with it’s motto of ‘Education and Training for Real World’, the University prides in demonstrating leadership by providing necessary human capital with world class technical skills to address Kenya’s development challenges. Over the short time, TU-K has positioned itself as a mentor to other technical institutions by developing benchmarks that are geared at establishing international quality standards for technical education in Kenya.

Moreover, modern university students are seeking to join programmes that clearly enhance their chances of securing suitable employment upon graduation, this calls upon TU-K to be alive to the relevance of programmes offered and to be more responsive to student needs.  TU-K offers professional programmes in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, Surveying, Planning, Real Estate and Quantity Surveying applied sciences, social sciences and business to mention but a few.  The University has also developed programmes aimed at producing technologists with the objective of bridging the gap between the engineer or scientist and the technician. Traditionally, the engineer is trained to focus on conceptualisation, innovation, and design of new artefacts and systems. The technologist on the other hand is concerned with the actual production of artefacts and the implementation of systems. TU-K thus offers professional Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees for those aiming to be technologists in the various fields mentioned above.

Through ‘real-world learning’ that links education to ‚real life, TU-K envisages to contribute fully and effectively to all spheres of Kenya’s Big 4 Agenda namely; food security, affordable housing, manufacturing and affordable healthcare, as part of Vision 2030.  As the University moves forward, it is imperative that its financial stability is secured and sustained.  In consequence, the University intends to strengthen its efforts to generate income through internal resources as well as engagement with external players and partners through; joint projects, consultancies, business enterprises, and adoption of entrepreneurial university initiatives in the management of its resources.

So far, four workshops have been held under the project East Africa Network of Excellence for Universities of Applied Science namely:-

  • Applied Teaching and Learning – Curriculum Planning and Design Workshop 8th – 12th Oct. 2018,
  • Application – Oriented Research and Knowledge Transfer Workshop 26th – 30th Nov. 2018
  • Technology Transfer Workshop 3rd – 7th Dec 2018,
  • Transfer Workshop 8th – 12th April 2019

The workshops carried the theme “Capacity Building on the German Model of Universities of Applied Sciences“.  In all the four Workshops, TU-K was represented by; Prof. Alex M. Muumbo (Mechanical Engineering), Dr. Salesio Kiura (Computing Technologies), Dr. Hellen Kabue (Business) and Mr. Joshua Ng’etuny (Chemical Engineering).
